There’s a stillness here that makes you feel small in the best possible way, and deeply grateful just to witness it.
My daughter and I recently did the most incredible winter day trip with Southern Discoveries, and I can’t recommend it enough - especially if you’re travelling with little ones and want a stress-free experience without the need to drive.
The Journey Begins: Te Anau to Milford Sound by Coach
Southern Discoveries are the original Milford Sound tour company, and they know what they’re doing. We hopped on their coach in Te Anau (the tour starts and ends in Queenstown if you're doing the full loop), and I was instantly impressed. Our friendly bus driver had Hailey’s car seat secured and ready in less than a minute, and we were off in a comfy, clean coach before I even had time to get my snacks out.
I had every intention of zoning out to some music on the drive, but our driver’s commentary was so interesting - full of fascinating facts about New Zealand, Fiordland, nature and the local history - that I ended up listening the whole way.
Scenic Stops That Took Our Breath Away
It wasn’t long before we reached our first stop at the Eglinton Valley, a wide, golden plain framed by dramatic peaks. Next up was a quick wander at Mirror Lakes, where still water reflects the mountains like a painting.
After a quick comfort stop with clean and free toilets, we had another gorgeous lake and mountain photo op (I believe it was Lake Gunn) that I hadn’t been to before - such a peaceful hidden gem. The road from there only got better, winding through alpine forest with snow-dusted mountains towering all around and sheer cliffs that made the journey feel like part of the destination.
We paused at Falls Creek, where we admired a rushing river and a tumbling waterfall, and then made our way through the Milford Tunnel with no wait time at all. A couple more scenic stops followed - including one with a cheeky kea trying to nibble the bus! That got plenty of laughs.
As we neared Milford, the driver gave us great tips for the cruise - like the best places to be at certain points to get the best views.
Cruising Through a Natural Wonderland
We boarded our large cruise boat and headed straight to the top deck for prime views. And wow - Mitre Peak and the surrounding fiord looked absolutely stunning in the winter light.
The nearly two-hour cruise was calm and beautiful, gliding past towering cliffs, rainforest, and waterfalls tumbling from great heights. There’s plenty of indoor seating if you need to warm up (or eat - which we did), but we spent most of our time outside, soaking in the sights and fresh air.
It honestly feels like stepping into another world - one where pterodactyls should be flying around. Although we didn’t spot any wildlife this time, it’s common to see seals, penguins, and even dolphins, so keep your eyes peeled!
One of the highlights was when the boat pulled up right underneath Stirling Falls, a 155-metre waterfall. If you’re standing at the front of the boat, expect to get a full face of spray - and it’s worth it! Hailey absolutely loved it. It was such a joy to bring her to one of my favourite places in the world and watch her experience it for the first time.
Also worth noting: while you do pay for a child’s seat on the coach, children under 4 cruise for free - such a great perk!
The Scenic Ride Back
After docking, we boarded the coach for the return trip to Te Anau. Hailey promptly fell asleep after her big day out, and I enjoyed the quiet journey back, watching the scenery roll by and feeling grateful for such a smooth, unforgettable experience.
Why Winter Is a Great Time to Go
I’ve been to Milford Sound in the busy warmer months, and it can get pretty packed with buses and tourists. This winter trip felt so much more peaceful and intimate. We got incredibly lucky with clear skies and sunshine (though it was cold!), but honestly - Milford Sound is the kind of place that's breathtaking no matter the weather. I’ve been in the rain and mist before, and it’s just as magical.
Final Thoughts
Our day with Southern Discoveries was nothing short of incredible. The comfortable coach ride, the well-planned scenic stops, the knowledgeable commentary, and the unforgettable cruise made it such an easy and enjoyable way to experience one of New Zealand’s most iconic destinations - especially as a family.
If you're heading to the South Island and thinking about Milford Sound, don’t drive yourself in winter - let someone else take the wheel and soak up the views. This was a day we’ll treasure forever.
