Where to Eat in Wellington: 10 Foodie Hot Spots & Eateries

Wellington, the coolest little capital of New Zealand, is an absolute haven for foodies, coffee, wine and craft beer lovers. The creative and cultural city is brimming with delicious eateries and foodie hot spots, with an amazing and diverse range of cuisine choices.

As a frequent return-visitor and having previously lived in Wellington for four years, I've narrowed down ten of my top recommendations that will undoubtedly become your return-visit faves too.

La Bella Italia

Awarded one of the 70 best Pizzerias in the World, Bella Italia in Petone is by far my most frequented restaurant in Wellington. It's the only Italian restaurant I've been to outside of Italy that is just as good, if not better in many cases.

My husband and I used to always order the lasagne or risotto (amazing) until we finally tried their pizzas - now we are hooked! Every time we go we can't help ordering their Rustica calzone to share, it's unbelievably good. They also do excellent tiramisu, cakes and gelato if you have any room afterwards.

Fidel's Cafe is an iconic Wellington institution known for its Cuban coffee, homestyle eats, midday brunches and late-night rums. Located on upper Cuba Street, it oozes Bohemian vibes and Kiwi hospitality. Don't miss their famous snickers milkshake!

Logan Brown

For a special occasion or those who don't mind a splurge, Logan Brown is a great pick for a memorable foodie experience. The fine-dining establishment is one of Wellington's top-awarded restaurants. I highly recommend the Saturday night Degustation Menu with either a five or seven-course menu. It's a meal you won't soon forget!

Husk

Husk Bar is a fantastic meet-up spot in Wellington for any time of the day. They do incredible brunches, delectable bites, lunches and share platters. They're also a top-notch craft beer brewery with a wide range of beer on tap. The vibe is trendy, cool, and very Wellington.

Little Penang

For something on the budget-friendly side, Little Penang is a small but popular Malaysian restaurant serving up tasty Malay and Asian dishes. Their classic curries with roti and nasi goreng are my go-to faves.

Havana Bar

Havana Bar is known as an incredibly popular venue for a drink, with fun live music and trendy cocktails, but the food there is outrageously good too. Located in two historic cottages, the Cuban-themed bar and restaurant have stellar menus for lunch, dinner, tapas and brunch.

Leuven Belgian Beer Cafe

Another restaurant I visit frequently is Leuven on Featherston Street. They specialise in different flavoured pots of mussels which come with the most incredible fries. They also have Leffe on tap, making it an all-round delectable Belgian experience.

Hippopotamus

Attached to the iconic QT Wellington (formerly the Museum Hotel), Hippopotamus is a French-inspired fine dining restaurant and cocktail bar.  They are well-known for their exquisite high teas (highly recommended) and their 7-course degustation menu.

Chocolate Fish Cafe

Chocolate Fish Cafe is a Wellington favourite, with the perfect waterfront spot. It's located in Shelly Bay, close to the Wellington Airport and only a 15-minute drive from the CBD. It's a great place for lunch on a sunny day, with an abundance of outdoor seating and great views of the Wellington harbour.

Dragons

I have two favourite Yum Cha restaurants in Wellington. Dragons have recently over-taken Regal from my top spot. It's fast-paced, high-quality with a large variety of yum cha options. It's extremely popular for lunch on the weekends so be sure to book in advance. I highly recommend Regal as well.

A few extra bonus faves:

Favourite fish & chips: Mt Vic Chippery

Favourite Vietnamese food:Restaurant 88, Where's Charlie?

Favourite Burgers: Ekim Burgers, Burger Liquor

Favourite bakeries: Bordeaux, Nada Bakery in Johnsonville

Favourite Indian food: Great India

Favourite places for a cocktail: The Library, Dragonfly, Foxglove

Favourite places for a beer: LBQ, Southern Cross, Panhead, Fortune Favours, Meow

Of course, there are probably a hundred more amazing restaurants and eateries in Wellington, these are just my personal favourites that I highly recommend.

Do you have any of your own faves to add to this list? Let me know in the comments below, I'd love to read them and check them out next time!
