Three Greek Islands not to miss on your next trip to Greece

I spent an unforgettable week cruising through the Greek Islands back in August 2015 - and honestly, it was the time of my life! While I wish I had more time to spend on each island, our itinerary gave us the perfect taste of six stunning Aegean islands nestled between Greece and Turkey.

It was such a great way to experience the diversity of the Greek Islands, and it helped me figure out exactly which ones I’d love to return to next time for a longer stay.

Here are my three absolute favourites from the trip - islands that completely stole my heart and should definitely be on your list for your next Greek getaway!

Santorini

My ultimate favourite of the Greek Islands, Santorini is every bit as idyllic and jaw-droppingly beautiful as you'd expect. Set atop a caldera (an old volcano), the island’s dramatic cliffs were formed by a massive eruption in the 16th century BC - creating one of the most scenic landscapes you’ll ever lay eyes on.

The whitewashed, cube-like houses and iconic blue-domed churches of Fira and Oia (pronounced Ee-ya) make it feel like you're walking through a real-life postcard. Watching the sunset from the cliffside is pure magic.

There’s so much to do here: wander the charming cobbled alleyways, browse boutique shops, rent scooters or four-wheelers, go wine tasting, hike scenic trails, swim at unique volcanic beaches, and savour incredible Greek cuisine. Santorini is perfect for couples, families, and friends alike - especially if you’re after that romantic island escape.

Atlantis bookstore in Oia

Don’t miss: The Atlantis Bookstore in Oia - one of the most charming bookshops in the world!

Rhodes

The largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, Rhodes offers an incredible mix of history, culture, and stunning beaches. Its medieval Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved in Europe - complete with cobbled streets, stone walls, and a majestic castle built by the Knights of St. John.

With over 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s also a haven for beach lovers. Kallithea and Faliraki are home to some of the best resorts, while beaches like Elli Beach offer diving boards and water sports. Whether you’re exploring ancient ruins like the Acropolis of Lindos or relaxing in the Valley of the Butterflies, Rhodes has something for every kind of traveller.

Insider tip: Hire a car and drive the island - you’ll discover hidden coves, quiet villages, and picture-perfect coastal views.

Mykonos

Mykonos is a dazzling Cycladic island famous for its chic style, whitewashed architecture, and beach party scene. While it’s known for its nightlife, it also offers plenty of charm and activities for every traveller.

Spend your days lounging on beaches like Paradise, Super Paradise, or Kalo Livadi, and your evenings watching the sunset from Little Venice before enjoying fresh seafood by the water. Mykonos Town (Chora) is a maze of narrow laneways, boutiques, and cocktail bars, perfect for wandering and soaking up the vibe.

And yes, the party scene is legendary - big-name DJs, dancing ‘til dawn, and beach clubs galore. But there are also tranquil spots and lovely family-friendly corners, making it ideal whether you’re looking to chill or celebrate.

The Greek Islands are all incredible - and I truly can’t wait to return. These three islands were my personal highlights, each offering something completely different but equally magical.

Have you been to Greece? Do you have a different set of favourites? I’d love to hear which islands stole your heart - drop them in the comments below!
