I got married in beautiful Rarotonga just over a year ago… and honestly, I’ve been dreaming of going back ever since! One week simply wasn’t enough. I’m already plotting my return to this island paradise in the Cook Islands - it’s that special.
If you’re thinking about visiting (and trust me, you absolutely should), here are five reasons that might just convince you to hit book on those flights right now.

The amazing Rupene at the Pacific Resort |
One of the absolute highlights of visiting Rarotonga is the incredible warmth of its people. I couldn’t get over how welcoming, laid-back, and genuinely friendly the locals are. Everywhere you go, you’ll be greeted with a big smile and a cheerful “Kia Orana!” - and they really mean it. The customer service is top-notch across the island, and it makes such a difference being surrounded by such happy, kind-hearted people. It’s one of those places where you instantly feel at home.

Best fish sammies on the island at The Mooring |
I loved the food in Rarotonga so much, I’ve already written a whole post about it: Best Places to eat in Muri, Rarotonga. Food is a huge part of Cook Islands culture, and it shows - everything is fresh, flavourful, readily available and prepared with love. The seafood in particular is next-level - the best I’ve ever had. And don’t even get me started on Ika Mata (a local raw fish dish marinated in citrus and coconut cream) - it completely knocked my socks off… or should I say, jandals!

Some of the awesome dancers at Highland Paradise |
The local Polynesian culture is absolutely enthralling - I couldn’t get enough of it while I was there. There’s something truly mesmerising about the rhythmic beating of drums, traditional dress, tribal dancing, and storytelling passed down through generations. To really immerse yourself, I highly recommend a cultural night show - both Te Vara Nui Village and Highland Paradise offer unforgettable evenings complete with incredible performances and a delicious buffet feast.

A tropical cocktail at the Barefoot Bar |
From the moment you step off the plane, you’ll feel it - you’re officially on island time. The warm breeze dances across your face, the gentle hum of minimal traffic fades into the background, and the sparkling sea seems to call your name. Life in Rarotonga moves at a slower pace, and the locals relaxed outlook makes it easy to slip into holiday mode. Whether you’re a couple, travelling with friends, or have little ones in tow, Raro is an incredibly easy, safe, and enjoyable destination. There’s plenty to do if you’re feeling adventurous - or simply kick back and soak up those laid-back island vibes.
Where to stay: Pacific Resort, Rarotonga - an incredible beachfront resort in Muri where I got married! I have a detailed review of them here if you are interested.

Barefoot Bar, Pacific Resort |
When to go: It is beautiful and warm year-round and there is no bad time to go, however, the dry season is said to be the best which is May - October.
Where to eat: Anywhere that serves fresh seafood! If you would like my recommendations for Muri, check out my post here.
What to do: There’s no shortage of amazing things to do in Rarotonga! Start with a snorkelling lagoon cruise - both Koka Lagoon Cruises and Captain Tama's are top picks for exploring the vibrant marine life (and having a good laugh along the way). For a cultural experience, head to a local night show like Te Vara Nui Village or Highland Paradise as mentioned - they usually run on alternate days, so check their websites for the schedule.
If you’re after a bit of adventure, go quad biking through the jungle, hire a scooter or bicycle to loop the island at your own pace, or head out hiking, scuba diving, kayaking or fishing. There’s something for every style of traveller. Just don’t forget to save some time to relax!

Let me know in the comments if you’ve been before, or if it’s on your travel wishlist - I’d love to hear!

Wow, this looks absolutely gorgeous! I've heard of the Cook Islands but didn't know much about it before. My husband and I have talked about going to a Southern Pacific Island in the future, this may have to be where we go! My only issue would be making sure to find enough food because I have a slight allergy to seafood which makes it a little harder to eat when visiting an island like this!
ReplyDeleteYou definitely had me when you mentioned paradise. Life has taken hold hard and fast lately and this would be just what I need.
