The Wairarapa is one of New Zealand’s most stunning regions - known for its charming small towns, world-class wineries, rolling countryside, and beautiful mountain views. It also happens to be absolutely packed with delicious eateries.
(Note this post has been updated in 2025).
Having lived in the heart of the region for the past 3.5 years (and visited often for years prior), I’ve developed a strong list of go-to foodie favourites - the places I return to time and time again.
In this post, I’m sharing my top personal picks across the Wairarapa - the standout dishes or treats I always recommend, plus a few all-rounders where I couldn’t choose just one!
Of course, this list is based entirely on my own experience (and tastebuds), and there are so many more amazing spots out there. But for now, here are 15 of the best things to eat - and where to find them in the Wairarapa.
1. The White Swan

The White Swan is an iconic country hotel and what I’d call my local - it’s where I want to grab a pint on a Friday arvo. With two dining options - the relaxed Gastro Pub and the elegant Captain’s Dining Room - both offer seasonal menus celebrating the best local ingredients.
Past favourites include their Parkvale Mushroom Risotto and one summer they had an Open Steak Sandwich with bacon jam (yum! - fingers crossed they bring it back!).
2. Clareville Bakery

It's hard not to stop at Clareville Bakery every time I drive past - everything in this award-winning cafe/bakery is just divine. My regular must-haves are their mince and cheese pies (pretty sure it's the best I've ever had), cronuts (a-ma-zing) and their freshly baked sourdough bread. Oh, and they do great coffee too.
3. Colombo

When I have guests visiting me in the Wairarapa, Colombo in Martinborough is my go-to to take them for lunch. It's the perfect setting, nestled amongst the vines, and their classic Italian-style pizzas are so delicious. Enjoy it with a flight of wine and you can make a great afternoon of it. It's also very family friendly.
4. The French Baker

The French Baker in Greytown is one of my regulars, it's my favourite place to grab a takeaway Flat White and a fresh-out-of-the-oven pastry. I usually alternate between their blueberry danishes and almond croissants (oh so good - who needs to go to France?).
5. Poppies

If you’re after a classic Martinborough wine lunch, this is the ultimate spot. Their platters for two are legendary - perfect with a glass of their own wine (after a tasting, of course!).
6. Ten O'clock Cookie
Ten CC in Masterton is a family favourite. From amazing pies and milkshakes to a packed cabinet of savouries, sandwiches, gelato and themed kids treats - there’s something for everyone. It’s popular, so expect a bit of a lunchtime line, but there’s plenty of seating indoors and out.
7. Moy Hall

Another Martinborough goodie - Moy Hall is a fantastic vineyard lunch spot with tapas-style shared plates. The homemade gnocchi is incredible and their cellar door is well worth a visit too.
8. The Offering

So many places claim they make the best cheese scones, but IMO The Offering is the very best! I've been getting their cheese scones for over five years and they always blow me away with how delicious they are.
The Offering is a super popular eatery in Greytown and it's a great spot for coffee and a scone, and they offer a great breakfast and lunch menu too. It's also super family-friendly with a kids play area, colouring books and a dedicated kids menu.
9. The Neighbourhood Cafe

For the best coffee and milkshakes in Martinborough, head to The Neighbourhood Cafe. It's super trendy (inside and out) with a bit of cool Kiwiana theme. They roast their own coffee and serve yummy cabinet food. Their caramel milkshakes are the bomb!

11. Meenez

Meenez Sweet Treats and Gelato in Greytown is my go-to place for ice cream (in particular, salted caramel). They also do amazing waffles, milkshakes, burgers, fries and more!
12. Tirohana Estate

Tirohana Estate in Martinborough is a boutique winery offering an outstanding dining experience with a seasonal menu that’s always spot-on. Their staff are incredibly knowledgeable - if you don't know what to order let them guide your choices. And trust me, don’t skip dessert!
13. C'est Cheese

14. Cuckoo Pizza

Another pizza recommendation? Yes! Cuckoo Pizza in Greytown is fantastic to eat in or takeaway. They serve a delicious range of stoned baked pizza, and even do homemade puddings (love the Tiramisu!).
15. Aunt Gingers Kitchen

Small but mighty, this cafe in Carterton serves great coffee and a solid selection of cabinet treats. I’m a big fan of their Breakfast Stack and cheesecakes - ideal for a great start to the day.
There are so many more incredible foodie gems in the Wairarapa - this list just scratches the surface! I’d love to hear your local favourites too.
