The harbourside, design-driven boutique hotel is full of exceptional and quirky art pieces which extend all the way to the rooms. It's the perfect place for a sophisticated work stay or special weekend getaway.
First Impressions
Being located across the road from Te Papa Museum made QT Wellington very easy to find (you can also keep an eye out for the signature golden hippopotamus). My husband and I stayed recently over a weekend and took advantage of the convenient valet parking service.
Walking inside, we were instantly blown away by the elegant explosion of art and design in every direction. Being right on check-in time there was a bit of line but it went quickly. I was warmly greeted by the friendly staff member at reception and the check-in process was smooth. We were given handy information about the hotel on a piece of paper and directions to our room. We took the elevator up to the fourth floor to our Gallery 4 King Harbourside Room.
The Room
Gallery 4 is an artistic collaboration with the very best of the creative community. Each room on the fourth floor is individually designed by a local artist.
The king bed was ultra comfortable and the sleep quality was excellent. We had a workstation, Sky TV and an impressive minibar with a Nespresso machine. We had a double wardrobe with full-length mirrors, with a safety deposit box, umbrellas, iron and board inside.
The modern bathroom featured a large bathtub, double sink and rainfall shower. Good quality toiletries were provided along with soft, fluffy towels and robes.
Other features of the room include excellent high-speed Wifi, a Bose Bluetooth speaker, DVD player, adjustable air conditioning/heating, dry-cleaning, daily housekeeping and room service.
QT Wellington offers superb facilities and services. A spa, sauna, swimming pool and gym are all onsite. There is a Business Centre with meeting rooms available, 24-hour reception, a concierge, valet parking and complimentary luggage storage.
Home to an impressive art collection, there are over 160 original artworks from talented local and national artists. Be sure to go on a walking tour to view the impressive range of high and low-brow art throughout the hotel.
The Food
Located on the third floor, the award-winning Hippopotamus Restaurant and Cocktail Bar is well-known in Wellington for its French-inspired dining. With a harbour view, glittering chandeliers and stunning decor, it's one of the most incredible restaurants I've ever set foot in.
Breakfast is a daily buffet spread with a large variety to cater to all kinds of tastes. There is a selection of hot and cold options, fresh fruit, pancakes, cereals, baked goods and juices, with coffee and tea freshly made for you.
As a treat, we also booked in for our first ever High Tea, of which Hippopotamus is famous for.
We were presented with a tiered platter of sweet and savoury French patisserie items, served with a bottomless teapot.

The tea selection is extensive and you can also order an optional champagne or cocktail. We went for a lemon-tea infused gin cocktail which was delightful. It was a wonderful first experience and I highly recommend it for a special occasion or weekend treat.
QT also has a newer onsite restaurant, Hot Sauce, an Asian-inspired eatery and cocktail bar. Open for dinner each night, it has traditional Thai, Singaporean, Korean and Japanese flavours. There is also a cafe in the hotel lobby.
Final Thoughts
I could not have been more impressed by my unique and cosy room with a view, the friendly customer service and the super convenient location in the heart of the city. QT Wellington is so much more than a hotel, it's an experience and one that you won't forget any time soon.
Staying there was extra special for me, as back in 2011 when I studied tourism, our class toured through this very hotel (formerly known as Museum Art Hotel) because it is that legendary in Wellington.
It's the perfect choice for all kinds of travellers looking for a cool and luxurious stay, from business to couples to solo travellers. The superb rooms, quirky yet sophisticated art and design, fantastic services and delicious food options make it an absolute pleasure to stay there. I already can't wait for my next visit.
Definitely add this incredible hotel to your New Zealand must-stay bucket list!
