A Perfect Stay at Main Street Hotel Ypres, Belgium

On my recent first visit to Belgium, I began in the historical town of Ypres. I spent two wonderful nights at Main Street Hotel, which was my favourite place I stayed at in my whole six weeks in Europe.

There's a reason this is the number one place to stay in Ypres and has won numerous awards, including the most romantic hotel in Belgium. The individually-designed rooms are incredibly cosy and beautifully decorated, the friendly service is top-notch, and the scrumptious daily breakfast is to die for. If you are heading to Ypres yourself, this boutique hotel is the perfect choice.

First Impressions

Main Street Hotel is located in the heart of Ypres, only a few minutes walk to the main Market Square. I instantly loved the look of the charming red-brick townhouse and it was just as beautiful on the inside. Being December, there was a lovely Christmas tree in the corner which gave it even more of a welcoming and cosy feel.

The sweet owner, Elodie greeted my husband and I on arrival and offered us any beverages we may have liked. She also gave us a map of the town and helped us with any questions we had, including recommendations for where to eat.

Elodie then showed us to our upstairs room and gave us a grand tour.

The Room

Our spacious room was named Glory, which is one of their six unique rooms that have their own theme. I was so taken by the golden and elegant room, I immediately fell in love. From top to bottom and every corner, it had something special about it, and it was the definition of cosy.

The large king bed was very comfortable and the sleep quality was excellent.

The furnishings included two cosy armchairs set in different corners, a double wardrobe with a safety deposit box, robes and slippers, a desk and chair, a Nespresso coffee machine, glassware, a small fridge and mini-bar that was all included in the room. (The first thing we did was pour ourselves a delightful Belgian beer!).

There was also an ornate full-length mirror, a satellite flat-screen TV set on the wall and a luggage rack. There were even little touches like Belgian chocolates on the side table. Everything about the room oozed comfort. Being winter, the heating was also adequately sufficient.

Through to the stylish ensuite, it had a standing vanity with good-quality complimentary toiletries and a hairdryer. The separate rainfall shower had excellent pressure options and the large duo bath came complete with its own TV!

Other features of the room included excellent high-speed Wifi, air conditioning, a DVD player, alarm clock and daily housekeeping. It had everything we could want for and it was the perfect base to explore Ypres from.

Beyond the Room

On the ground floor, as well as the reception desk there is a most welcoming lounge area. Here you can sit and enjoy a tea or coffee or indulge in the honesty bar that's available. You can make use of the library, DVD collection, magazines, puzzles and even play a game of chess.

Other services and facilities the hotel provides include an iron and ironing board, adaptor plugs available, toothbrush and razor set on demand, laundry service, and any tourist help and information they can offer.

There is also a beautiful breakfast room and terrace where you can enjoy it every morning.

Breakfast

An incredible daily breakfast is included in the room. You have a choice of freshly cooked hot options from their menu as well as a classic European spread with bread, pastries, cereals, cold meats, cheese, fresh fruit and yoghurts.

There was also a large selection of beverages to choose from including fresh juices, and the hot coffee was delicious and strong.

For my first breakfast, I was greedy and ordered both the truffle scrambled eggs and a waffle.
It was my first time trying a Belgian waffle and it was presented with all the trimmings and was absolutely divine, the best I ever had. The truffle eggs were also a-ma-zing.

On my second morning, I went for poached eggs with mushrooms and it was another delectable feast. My husband loved his choices too. It was the perfect way to start each day, all set for another day of exploring.

Final Thoughts

I absolutely loved my stay at Main Street Hotel and I didn't want to leave! My room was so gorgeous and comfortable and it was in the ideal location to explore the town.

What makes this boutique hotel so special is its unique character and charm, which so many hotels and chains just lack.

Elodie was the perfect host and extremely helpful with any recommendations. She is more than happy to help make your stay as wonderful as possible.

Main Street Hotel is a perfect choice for all kinds of travellers, from families and couples to solo travellers. The price is very reasonable for such a luxurious and comfortable stay in a great location.

The cosy and clean rooms, friendly service and delicious breakfast made it an absolute pleasure to stay there and I highly recommend it to anyone passing by the historical and beautiful town of Ypres.

  1. What a delightful little place and a great location. That three dimensional wall paper caught my attention too.
