Taupō - The Perfect Stopover in the Heart of the North Island

If you're road-tripping through the centre of Aotearoa, Taupō is an absolute gem of a stopover. Nestled beside the shimmering Lake Taupō (New Zealand’s largest lake), this vibrant town offers the perfect blend of nature, adventure, and relaxation - with something for every type of traveller.

For something sweet, pop into the Honey Hive shop (honey tastings and honeycomb ice cream - yum!), then stroll along the lakefront and snap a photo at the Taupō sign. If the weather’s right, you can swim or head out on the water in a kayak or boat. There’s also a fantastic kids’ playground right in the centre of town, complete with toilets and changing facilities. 

And for the brave daredevils out there, don’t miss the thrill of Taupō Bungy - one of New Zealand’s most scenic adrenaline rushes (I've done it!).

Another fantastic and slightly more affordable family-friendly option is Taupō DeBretts Spa Resort. With spacious cabins, a fun-filled water park, soothing mineral hot pools, a playground, and even an onsite cafe, it’s the perfect blend of family fun and relaxation after a big day of travel or adventure.

When it comes to food, Taupō has no shortage of delicious options. Whether you’re after a laid-back lakeside cafe, a classic Kiwi bakery, or an upscale restaurant with stunning views, there’s something to suit every taste and budget. 

You’ll find plenty of great spots right by the waterfront - perfect for a bite with a view. There are also heaps of family-friendly choices, from local gems like Loan Star to iconic spots like McDonald’s (often dubbed the coolest McD’s in the world - it has a real aeroplane you can sit and eat your lunch in!).

Whether you’re grabbing coffee and pastries in the morning or enjoying a relaxed dinner as the sun sets over the lake, Taupō’s food scene is an absolute win.
