The Ultimate place to stay in Athens: AthensWas Luxury Hotel

For an out-of-the-ordinary hotel experience in the ancient capital of Greece, look no further than AthensWas. The design-driven 5-star hotel is located in the heart of historic Athens, only a few minutes’ walk to the iconic Acropolis Hill and other major points of interest. It's the perfect place to stay for the ultimate Athenian experience.

First Impressions

My husband and I were staying in Athens for two nights after Greek Island hopping and we took a taxi directly from the airport. AthensWas Luxury Hotel was easy to find, being located on Dionysiou Areopagitou, the most well-known pedestrian street in Athens.

Walking inside, we were instantly impressed by the modern and elegant design. We were warmly greeted by the friendly staff member at reception and the check-in process was smooth. We were given a refreshing drink and a handy map of Athens. Our bags were taken for us and we took the elevator up to our Classic Room.

The Room

There are a range of luxurious rooms to choose from, and ours being the smallest on offer was perfectly lovely, welcoming and spacious, with a comfortable king-sized bed and pillow menu available. Our bags were promptly brought in and we were presented with a welcome traditional Greek Raki drink.

We had a workstation, a High Definition Smart TV, a double wardrobe with a full-length mirror, a mini-fridge with premium minibar products, tea and a Nespresso coffee machine, safety deposit box, robe and slippers.

The modern marble bathroom featured a walk-in rainfall shower and a large vanity. Good quality toiletries were provided along with the softest fluffy towels.

Stylish Greek art were set on the walls and we had our own balcony with a table and chairs. Other features of the room included excellent high-speed Wifi, adjustable air conditioning, laundry service, daily housekeeping and room service.

Delicious chocolates were even left for us during evening turndowns which was a lovely touch. Our room was fully soundproof and the curtains were blackout which made for excellent sleep quality. It was one of the most comfortable stays I've had in Europe.

Beyond the Room

A top feature of AthensWas Luxury Hotel is the legendary rooftop bar and restaurant, Sense, with the most incredible view of Acropolis Hill. It’s the perfect spot for an afternoon pick-me-up or sunset wine or cocktail.

You don’t have to be a guest to enjoy it and bookings are recommended for the renowned fine dining restaurant run by a top Greek Chef.

It's considered to be among the best rooftop restaurants in Athens, "where guests are invited to explore the creative realms of classic Greek gastronomy, in a setting that is simply awe-inspiring."

The hotel offers superb 5-star facilities and services. There is a well-equipped Fitness Corner with personal training services, a meeting venue and business centre perfect for corporate events, in-room dining and services such as massage and spa sessions, tour planning and private transfers available, 24-hour reception and complimentary luggage storage.

They also have an exceptional breakfast available at the ground floor dining area with a choice of indoor or outdoor seating.

The Food

Breakfast is served each morning between 7-11 am and we highly enjoyed our daily spread. As well as an a la carte menu choice (my favourites were the eggs benedict and Bougatsa), we were presented with a box of handmade breakfast goodies. This included delicious bread, Greek yoghurt, honey, granola, sweet and savoury cakes.

The coffee was good and strong, the service was great and it was the perfect start to each day.

Their Promenade Eat & Drink food and beverage outlet also operates from 11 am, and the rooftop
Sense Restaurant is open 12-5 pm for lunch and 6-11 pm for dinner.
